Few winter scenes from the Army of the Potomac record a single regiment's quarters as directly as this pencil drawing of the 16th Michigan's camp near Falmouth, Virginia. Dated January 10, 1863, it was made weeks after the Union defeat at Fredericksburg in December 1862, when the army settled into winter quarters on the Rappahannock River opposite that town. The 16th Michigan belonged to the Iron Brigade, and a sketch made on the spot like this one gives a sense of how soldiers lived through the cold, muddy months between major campaigns.
