Windmills rise above the wooden buildings of a settlement in the Ialutorovsk district of Tobolsk Province, in western Siberia, where open meadows made wind-powered milling practical. Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii made the image in 1912 as one of three glass negatives, each exposed through a red, green or blue filter, which were later combined into a color picture. His survey of the Russian Empire, carried out roughly between 1909 and 1915, documented rural life shortly before war and revolution reshaped it. Look at the plain log and plank buildings and the flat grassland stretching beyond them.
