Clotheslines full of drying laundry rise above the apartment houses in this view of New York, a record of a Monday wash day around 1900. Monday was traditionally laundry day in many households, when clothes were scrubbed, rinsed and hung out to dry in shared yards and open spaces. The print is a photochrom, a process that produced color images from several printed impressions, and the Detroit Photographic Company held the American rights to make such views. Its bright color gives an ordinary household chore a cheerful, almost showpiece look.
