A color lithograph window card from around 1869, this advertisement pairs a washing machine with a wringer, the hand-cranked rollers that squeezed water from wet laundry. Window cards like this were pasted in shop windows and sales rooms to draw customers inside. Before home appliances, washday meant hauling water, scrubbing by hand, and wringing sheets and clothes by arm, so the machine's promise of lighter, faster work was the central sales pitch. The card's domestic scene, with its focus on the kitchen and the woman doing the work, shows how manufacturers marketed these machines to the women who would use them.
