Titled with the phrase from John Howard Payne's 1823 song "Home, Sweet Home," this color lithograph takes a sentiment that had become a household byword by the 1870s. The print is credited to G.F. Gilman, and its copyright notice places it among the many inexpensive color lithographs that circulated in the late nineteenth century, when families often hung such images in parlors and sitting rooms. Its catalog subjects, leisure and family life, reflect the decade's appetite for home-centered imagery, and the print offers a window onto how middle-class households liked to picture themselves.
