A pencil-and-ink sketch of a wharf landing with a crane, labeled as the place where the columns for the House of Representatives were brought ashore, shows how the Capitol was built. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect who took over the building's design after 1803, dated the drawing May 3, 1817, and wrote his initials on it. The sheet also carries the name "Wm Small" and the number 9, which suggest it was part of the working records of the project. In the years after the War of 1812, Latrobe was rebuilding the damaged Capitol, and the heavy stone elements had to be moved by water and then hoisted into place.
