Early plans of the Capitol are scarce, and this sheet carries its own history in an inscription on the front. In it, Benjamin Henry Latrobe notes that George Blagden gave him the drawing in May 1803 as the only existing drawing of the building. That year Latrobe was appointed surveyor of the public buildings, and the plan labels the rooms of the unfinished Capitol, including the House of Representatives, the Senate, the Library, the Conference room, and the Grand Vestibule. Watercolor washes over ink and graphite make the layout easy to follow.
