The reverse of this floor plan of the United States Capitol carries a detail easy to overlook: side elevations of cranes, the hoisting machines that lifted stone and timber during construction. Drawings like this one belong to the architectural and engineering collection at the Library of Congress, and they show how the building was worked out on paper before and during its erection. Construction began in 1793, when George Washington laid the cornerstone, and the Capitol grew over several decades under successive architects. Its plans changed many times along the way, so sheets like this record decisions made during that long process.
