Shelving Rock is a rocky bluff on the western shore of Lake George, and this view looks south from its ledges over the long, narrow lake and the surrounding Adirondack ridges. By the turn of the twentieth century, Lake George had become a popular resort destination, reached by steamboat and rail, and tourists came for scenery like this. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many such views for travelers and souvenir buyers, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative is one of its survivors. Its catalog number and the Lake George subject make it a useful record of how the region was pictured for visitors at that time.
