Hearts Bay, on the western shore of Lake George in New York's Adirondack foothills, is the focus here, with the Rogers' Rock Hotel overlooking the water. The rock is named for Major Robert Rogers, whose rangers operated in this region during the French and Indian War, and the lake drew steamboat passengers and summer vacationers well before 1900. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide travel views, made this glass plate negative in the early 1900s to document such resort scenes. The inscribed "1840" on the negative does not match the 1900 to 1910 date range, so it is worth treating with caution.
