Silver Bay, on Lake George in upstate New York, was known for its lakeside hotel, which this glass-plate negative records in the first decade of the 1900s. The Lake George region had become a popular summer destination, with steamboats and railroads bringing vacationers from New York City, Albany, and beyond to resorts and boarding houses along the shore. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this negative, was one of the era's largest commercial photographers, documenting such hotels and scenic spots for travel promotion. The large 8 by 10 inch format gives the building's architecture and its grounds a clarity that smaller prints often lose.
