Silver Bay on the western shore of Lake George is the setting here, with the hotel and its landing photographed from Slim Point, a vantage that puts the water and the surrounding mountains in the same frame. The Silver Bay Hotel was a resort building of the kind that drew summer visitors to the Adirondack lakes in the early twentieth century, when rail and steamboat service made the region a popular retreat. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold views of hotels, lakes and scenic spots to tourists and promoters. Its 8 x 10 inch glass negative records the scene as it looked around 1906, a time when lakeside resorts like this one were at the height of their appeal.
