Lake George's Kattskill Bay, on the lake's western shore near Hague in the Adirondack foothills, is the setting here, and the Trout Pavilion Hotel stands at its water's edge in this pair of glass-plate negatives. Together the two plates form a panorama, a format the Detroit Publishing Company used to show resort hotels and their waterfronts as broad views. The company, which worked across the early 1900s, sold such scenes to travelers and promoters, so the picture doubles as an advertisement for the lakeside vacation. Its wide sweep also captures the lake's shoreline and the hotel grounds as they looked before the mid-century changes that transformed many Lake George resorts.
