French Point, seen here from the south, is a headland on the western shore of Lake George in New York's Adirondack foothills. The photographer was S.R. Stoddard of Glens Falls, whose studio produced many views of the lake and surrounding country for summer visitors. By about 1890, Lake George was a popular resort reached by steamboat and rail, and scenic views like this one sold well to tourists wanting a memento of their trip. The record's date and caption details are unverified, so the exact vantage point is worth checking against a map.
