Looking south from the Sagamore, the view takes in Green Island, a small wooded island in the southern basin of Lake George in Warren County, New York. The Sagamore was a large resort hotel on the island, and by the early 1900s Lake George was a well-known summer destination for visitors arriving by rail and steamboat. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed scenic places across the United States and sold views to travelers and tourist trade. The picture shows how the lake and its islands were presented to visitors in the years before the First World War.
