Black Mountain rises above the water in this view taken from Red Rock Point on Lake George in New York's Adirondack region. The picture is an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to record scenic spots for sale as color-tinted prints around 1900 to 1910. Lake George was already a popular summer destination for visitors arriving by steamboat and rail, and views like this one helped build its reputation as a resort. The number "1809" scratched on the negative is a catalog marking worth noticing for anyone studying how the company organized its work.
