This portrait shows Cass Gilbert, the New York architect born in 1859, taken by the F.E. Geisler studio in New York in the years between 1916 and 1923. Gilbert was one of the leading designers of his generation, best known for the Woolworth Building in lower Manhattan, completed in 1913, which was then the tallest building in the world. Trained in the Beaux-Arts tradition, he favored classical forms and monumental public buildings, including the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul. Portraits like this one from his most productive years show the face of a man whose skyline work still shapes the city.
