The studio mark on this cabinet card reads "David McKay / A.K.P. Trask, Philada., Pa.," so the sitter's name appears on the mount itself, along with the Philadelphia studio that made it. The record dates the sitting to June 1, 1883, when McKay was about 23. Cabinet cards like this one, roughly 4 by 6.5 inches on heavy stiff card, became the standard studio portrait in the 1880s, and they were often sold to be given away or kept in family albums. The format offers a clear view of how a young Philadelphia man chose to present himself to the camera in the early 1880s.
