Jean-Dominique Cassini, the astronomer who gave his name to the Cassini family's long run of French mapmaking and observatory work, is the sitter here, rendered as a one-tint lithograph, a process that uses a single stone and one ink to build tone and line. Cassini (1625–1712) was born in Italy and spent most of his career at the Paris Observatory, where he charted the motions of Jupiter's moons and helped establish the scientific basis for accurate national mapping. The record gives no date for this print, so it is best read as a later portrait made from his well-known reputation rather than a likeness drawn from life.
