The Acropolis in Athens, its temples crowning a rocky hill above the city, is the subject here rather than the stadium or athletes. The 1936 Berlin Games drew openly on ancient Greece, with the torch relay setting out from Olympia, and Leni Riefenstahl's film of the Games opens with images of classical Greek sites that present antiquity as the forerunner of the modern festival. The caption card's date and attribution are unverified, so the print is best read as a document of that classical framing.
