Sir Peter Warren's name is tied to the memorial tradition, since the record files this wood engraving under sculpture and monuments, suggesting it shows a commemorative work rather than a living sitter. Warren was a British naval officer who served in North American waters during the War of the Austrian Succession, took part in the 1745 capture of Louisbourg, and was knighted in 1747 after his fleet's action off Cape Finisterre. He died in New York in 1752, and his sizable American holdings and family ties kept his name current there. Harper's Monthly printed the engraving in 1887, when illustrated magazines often reproduced old monuments and portraits of colonial-era figures.
