The caption card for this c1915 print files it under modern dance, placing Stafford Pemberton among the performers who were moving away from ballet's rigid conventions in the years before the First World War. Isadora Duncan had already shown audiences in Europe and America that movement could grow from natural gesture, and by the 1910s a new generation was testing similar ideas on American stages. The record is brief and its details are unverified, so the portrait is best read as a document of that period, when studio photographs were a common way for dancers to publicize themselves.
