Few lighthouse keepers became as well known as Ida Lewis, who tended the Lime Rock light off Newport, Rhode Island. She took over the station after her father's death in 1872 and was credited with rowing out to rescue many people from drowning in Newport Harbor, a record that brought her national newspaper attention in her lifetime. The record dates this portrait to about 1912, but that date is unverified and falls near the year of her death in 1911, so it may have circulated as a memorial image. Her reputation as a heroine helped make women keepers visible to the public.
