Clara Barton, the nurse and founder of the American Red Cross, sits for this head-and-shoulders portrait, photographed facing the camera. The print carries a 1904 copyright registration in the name of J.E. Purdy of Boston, a studio that produced many portraits of public figures in that era. By 1904 Barton was in her eighties and had long since retired from the Red Cross, which she had led from 1881 to 1904, so the image captures her during the final years of a career that had begun with Civil War battlefield relief work.
