This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Faisal I facing the viewer, and the print reproduces a painting by Sir William Orpen, though the record's date for the original is uncertain. The print's c1921 date places it around the time Faisal became king of Iraq in 1921, after he had led Arab forces alongside British officers during the revolt against the Ottoman Empire in World War I. Pictures like this one circulated widely in the early 1920s, when Western audiences followed the new Arab states that emerged from the postwar settlement.
