Edward T. Devine was a leading American social worker whose career centered on organized charity and the Progressive Era reform movement. He served as general secretary of the New York Charity Organization Society and later helped edit *Charities* and *The Survey*, journals that shaped debates over poverty, housing, and public welfare in the early 1900s. He also taught at Columbia University, where he helped build social work into an academic discipline. This portrait, catalogued with a caption card whose details are unverified, is best read as a record of a man who helped define the professional standards of American social welfare.
