Edward Thring, the English schoolmaster who led Uppingham School in Rutland from 1853 until his death in 1887, is the subject of this portrait. He broadened a largely classical curriculum to include music, drawing and gymnastics, and his writings on teaching were widely read in Victorian Britain. This image is an engraving by T. Johnson, made from a photograph by Russell & Sons, a method that let printed books and periodicals reproduce a likeness before halftone photo reproduction was common. The record gives no date, so the engraving's exact year is unknown.
