Edward Knight Collins, a shipping businessman, is shown turned slightly to the left in this half-plate daguerreotype, its surface warmed by gold toning. The portrait was produced in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1854, a decade when the daguerreotype was the dominant portrait process in America. Collins built the Collins Line, a transatlantic steamship company that challenged the British Cunard service in the early 1850s. The sitter's identity rests on an engraving published in Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion in December 1854, since the plate itself bears no name.
