Two numbers are scratched into this half-plate daguerreotype, 159 on the face and 58 on the back, and the back also bears the sitter's name. The portrait shows Cornelius Vanderbilt, the shipping and railroad magnate, head and shoulders and turned slightly to the left, with the side whiskers he wore. Mathew Brady's studio made the plate sometime between 1844 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the dominant form of photographic portraiture and gold toning was used to deepen the image and protect its silver surface. The plate later passed through the U.S. War College and reached the Library of Congress in 1920.
