The most distinctive feature of this daguerreotype is the name scratched into the face of the plate, which misspells the sitter as "Garrabaldi," along with a number and a second number on the back. Those marks suggest the plate was catalogued or identified soon after it was made. Mathew Brady's New York studio produced it, and the plate is gold toned, a treatment that deepened the image and gave it a warmer cast. The portrait dates to between 1844 and 1860, the years when Giuseppe Garibaldi was becoming known as a leader of Italian unification and drawing attention in Europe and America. Its bearded, three-quarter profile shows him as the public would have first encountered him.
