This half-plate daguerreotype shows the painter Henry Inman, who died in 1846, in a head-and-shoulders study turned slightly to the left. The sitter is identified by comparison with an engraving published in C. Edwards Lester's 1846 book on American artists. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1846, when the daguerreotype was becoming a popular way for professionals to sit for portraits. Gold toning warmed the silver image and helped protect its delicate surface, and numbers scratched on the back of the plate hint at how the studio tracked its work.
