An engraving titled *The Astronomer* was issued as a plate in the *catalog of the Galerie Lebrun* of 1792, where it faces page 49. Its place in that catalog ties it to the Paris art collection of the Lebrun family, whose holdings were documented in print during the final years of the Old Regime. Reproductions like this one let collectors and scholars study works they could not see in person, and the astronomer as a subject reflects the period's interest in observation and science. The record itself is based on older caption information, so the attribution and the identity of the original artwork should be checked before it is relied on.
