Carlu's "Production, America's answer!" makes a single argument: the United States could help its allies most by building war materiel at home. Issued in 1941 by the Office for Emergency Management's Division of Information, it appeared while the country was still officially neutral, months before Pearl Harbor drew it into the war. The poster was printed by the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C., and reflects the wartime mobilization drive that pushed factories toward defense output. Carlu, a French-born designer working in the United States, brought a modernist graphic style to the effort, and posters like this one helped establish the look of American home-front propaganda.
