Stage star Nora Bayes is the subject of this group portrait, taken with her family as they returned to America aboard the S.S. Leviathan in 1924. Bayes was one of the most popular vaudeville performers of her era, best remembered for "Shine On, Harvest Moon," which she recorded and performed with Jack Norworth. The Leviathan, formerly the German liner Vaterland, had been transferred to the United States after World War I and was among the largest passenger ships afloat when it sailed the Atlantic. The New York firm Underwood & Underwood made the picture.
