Tom Bowling's win in the Jerome Stakes for three-year-olds at Jerome Park on October 4, 1873, sets this print apart from the many racing scenes in the collection. The race was a two-mile dash for a purse of $5,500, and the unofficial time of 3:40 is noted beneath the title. Jerome Park, in the Fordham section of the Bronx, opened in 1866 under the American Jockey Club, and it became one of the most fashionable tracks in the country. Currier & Ives issued hand-colored lithographs like this one to sell to a public eager for sporting news.
