Huntress, a celebrated trotting mare, is the subject here, and the lithograph commemorates a Sept. 23, 1872, event at the Prospect Park fairgrounds on Long Island, where a three-mile dash offered a purse of $1,250 with $1,000 added for any horse that beat Dutchman's time of 7:32 1/2. The prizes were $700 for first, $350 for second and $200 for third. Currier & Ives issued the hand-colored print in New York in 1873, and such prints carried news of racing records to buyers who never attended a track. Harness racing drew large crowds in the years after the Civil War, and this sheet shows how the sport's fame spread.
