This lithograph shows two of the most talked-about trotting mares of the 1880s, Maud S. and Aldine, on June 15, 1883, at the Gentlemen's Driving Park in Morrisania, New York. Their owner, William H. Vanderbilt, is shown driving them himself, which underscores how closely wealthy horse owners were tied to the harness-racing craze of the period. Currier & Ives issued many prints of trotters during these years, and such images were popular with a public that followed record times and famous matches as closely as it followed baseball scores.
