Riverside Park on Manhattan's Upper West Side is the setting for this view, where Ulysses S. Grant's remains were first placed in a temporary vault after his death in July 1885. The permanent mausoleum was not dedicated until April 1897, so the photograph captures the site during the long wait for a final resting place. The print is credited to a photographer named Carvalho, though the caption details are unverified. Grant, who led Union armies to victory and later served two terms as president, drew enormous crowds to his New York funeral procession.
