Here the American baritone Reinald Werrenrath is shown on the golf course, bent over a ball on the green rather than standing on a concert stage. Born in 1883, Werrenrath was a well-known concert and recital singer who also recorded for the Victor label, and this picture shows his off-stage life as a golfer. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made by a New York agency that documented public figures and daily life in the early twentieth century. Pictures like this show how performers and other notable people were presented to newspaper readers between about 1900 and 1940.
