Pitch and putt, a short-course form of golf built around approach shots and putting rather than long drives, is the activity this 1931 photograph records at Lohoya Lodge in the Napa Valley of California. The game drew many players in the early 1930s because it needed less land and money than a full eighteen-hole course, and it suited resorts and lodges that wanted to offer recreation close at hand. The print belongs to the Wittemann Collection, a group of photographs from the 1930s that documents American leisure and everyday life in that decade.
