Arnold Palmer, the Pennsylvania golfer who did more than any other figure to turn professional golf into a television-era spectacle, is the subject of this 1964 photograph taken at the Phoenix Open in Arizona. By the mid-1960s Palmer was at the height of his fame, with a large following of fans nicknamed "Arnie's Army" who followed his matches across the course. The Phoenix Open was then one of the stops on the regular tour, and images like this one capture the hands-on, athletic style of play that made him a household name. Palmer's popularity helped bring larger galleries and broadcast audiences to the sport during that decade.
