Opie Percival Read (1852-1939) was a newspaper editor and prolific novelist from Tennessee and Illinois, best known for his humorous stories of small-town and rural American life. In this portrait he appears as a golf sage, a playful framing that points to his later years, when he was widely known as a genial public figure. The cigar in the picture ties to the subject tags on the record, which mark smoking as part of how the image was staged and read. Portraits of writers posed with a cigar and a golf club were a common way of presenting authors as relaxed and approachable in the 1920s and 1930s.
