Few images of the period tie slavery so directly to the national capital. This 1836 broadside from the American Anti-Slavery Society sets nine wood engravings beside a text that names the Declaration of Independence, the United States Capitol, and the slave markets of Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Theodore Dwight Weld, a leading abolitionist lecturer and organizer, is named among its subjects. The contrast it draws between the young republic's founding principles and the buying and selling of enslaved people within sight of Congress was a central argument of the movement, which was then pressing Congress to act against slavery in the District.
