Uncle Sam takes the blame in this December 1930 cartoon, with Benito Mussolini complaining that the American stock market has badly damaged Italian progress, and bears, the Wall Street symbol for falling prices, are among the figures drawn into the scene. The Wall Street crash of October 1929 spread quickly overseas as banks failed and trade contracted, and by 1930 Italy's exports and industry were feeling the strain. Cartoons like this one used such figures to argue that a financial collapse in one country was pulling down others.
