Sombreros hang in rows at a market in Yauco, a town on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, which the caption spells in the older form "Porto Rico." This stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs mounted on card for viewing through a stereoscope, dates to around 1900 and was catalogued with the subject tags hats, markets, and Puerto Rico. Stereo views like this were sold widely in the early twentieth century and gave American audiences a close look at distant places, often as a mix of commerce and everyday scene. The record itself is marked as unverified, so the exact date and details of the stall are best treated as approximate.
