A stereograph card taken in the Jewish quarter of Warsaw, Poland, shows a street market where hats and clothing were sold, a trade that for generations gave the district much of its economic life. The image is one of the Keystone View Company's stereo views, made for paired-lens viewers that were popular in American and European parlors in the early twentieth century and gave a sense of depth to scenes of distant places. Its caption card, dated around December 1919, places the scene only a year after the end of the First World War, when Warsaw was newly the capital of an independent Poland. Viewers today can read it as a record of commercial street life in a neighborhood that was largely destroyed during the Second World War.
