Earle's drawing of the slave market at Rio de Janeiro was engraved by Edward Finden and published as plate 23 in Maria Graham's *Journal of a Voyage to Brazil*, issued in London in 1824. Graham had lived in Rio during 1821 to 1823, and the print reflects the city's role as one of the largest ports of entry for enslaved Africans in the Americas. Her narrative treats the trade as a serious moral problem rather than an ordinary part of city life. The image is worth studying for its record of a public traffic in people that many European visitors of the period described only in passing, if at all.
