A heap of watermelons fills the foreground of this 1932 view of a fruit market in Mosul, a city in northern Iraq on the Tigris River, across from the ruins of ancient Nineveh. The picture belongs to the G. Eric and Edith Matson Photograph Collection, a body of work by a couple who documented daily life across the Near East and whose negatives later went to the Library of Congress. Scenes like this one record the produce trade that supplied city households in the early 1930s, as Iraq moved from British mandate toward independence. The caption information is unverified, so the exact stall and date should be treated with some caution.
