Roosevelt's speech at New Castle, Wyoming, is the detail that sets this card apart from other pictures of the president. The stereograph was made around 1903, the year Roosevelt toured the western states, speaking to crowds in small towns as well as larger cities. Stereo cards like this one were copyrighted by R.Y. Young and sold by the American Stereoscopic Company, which produced them in large numbers for home parlor viewers. Two slightly offset images on the card combine in a stereoscope to create a sense of depth, so the crowd and the platform appear to stand before the viewer.
