Gathered in Salina, Kansas, this crowd of schoolchildren, parents, and teachers came out to see President Theodore Roosevelt during his western tour, which the record dates to about 1903. The scene was recorded as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs mounted side by side on a card that merged into a single image with apparent depth when viewed through a stereoscope. R.Y. Young held the copyright, and the American Stereoscopic Company issued the card, part of a popular trade that let people far from such events see them in their own parlors. The date is approximate, so the exact day of the visit is best confirmed against the tour's itinerary.
